شهبال شبپره در دوم نوامبر ۱۹۴۰ در تهران به دنیا آمد. او در فضای پرشور و پرجنب‌وجوش فرهنگی ایران پیش از انقلاب بزرگ شد و از همان دوران علاقه‌ی عمیقی به موسیقی پیدا کرد. این علاقه بعدها او را به سمت تشکیل گروه‌های موسیقی پیشرو کشاند که نقش مهمی در شکل‌گیری موسیقی پاپ ایرانی داشتند.
او بیشتر به عنوان بنیان‌گذار گروه «بلک کتس» شناخته می‌شود؛ نخستین گروه پاپ ایرانی که ابتدا در تهران شکل گرفت و بعدها در لس‌آنجلس دوباره جان گرفت. تحت مدیریت شهبال، بلک کتس تبدیل به سکوی پرتابی برای بسیاری از ستاره‌های آینده موسیقی پاپ فارسی شد. او همچنین گروه‌های دیگری مانند «سیلوئت» و «شی‌با‌هی» را بنیان‌گذاری کرد و با این کار نشان داد که فراتر از یک خواننده، یک تهیه‌کننده و نوآور برجسته است.
بلک کتس که فعالیت خود را در دهه ۱۳۴۰ خورشیدی در تهران آغاز کرده بود، پس از انقلاب در لس‌آنجلس بازسازی شد و به یکی از ارکان اصلی موسیقی پاپ ایرانی در خارج از کشور بدل گردید. در طول سال‌ها، ترکیب اعضای گروه بارها تغییر کرد و خوانندگان بزرگی همچون ابی، فرهاد مهراد، شهرام شبپره، حسن شماعی‌زاده و دیگران در آن حضور یافتند. با این حال، شهبال همواره نیروی ثابت و خلاق پشت این گروه باقی ماند و سبک‌های گوناگونی را تجربه کرد، از جمله ریتم ویژه‌ای که خودش آن را «راک دمبُلی» نامید.
شهبال تنها به فعالیت شخصی اکتفا نکرد و نقش مهمی در معرفی و پرورش هنرمندان تازه داشت. یکی از نمونه‌های موفق، خواننده‌ای به نام سپیده است که در سال ۱۹۹۸ به گروه سیلوئت پیوست و با هدایت او توانست به شهرت برسد. آلبوم «بیوتی اند د بیت» با حضور سپیده منتشر شد و او پس از مدتی فعالیت انفرادی خود را آغاز کرد؛ این نمونه‌ای روشن از نگاه دقیق شهبال به استعدادها و تعهدش به پیشرفت موسیقی پاپ فارسی بود.
نقش شهبال در موسیقی ایرانی تنها به اجرا محدود نمی‌شود. او در طول دهه‌ها به عنوان چهره‌ای پایدار باقی ماند که گروه بلک کتس را در دوره‌ها و جغرافیای گوناگون هدایت کرد. میراث او نه‌تنها در ترانه‌ها و اجراهای خودش، بلکه در هنرمندانی که معرفی کرده و سبک‌های نوینی که پایه‌گذاری نمود، همچنان زنده است.
Shahbal Shabpareh was born on November 2, 1940, in Tehran, Iran . Growing up amidst the vibrant cultural landscape of pre-revolution Iran, he developed a profound passion for music, which eventually led him to form seminal pop groups that would shape the Iranian music scene.
He is best known as the founder of the Black Cats, the very first Iranian pop band, originally established in Tehran and later re-formed in Los Angeles. Under his leadership, the Black Cats became a launching pad for many future legends of Persian pop music. Shahbal also founded other groups including Silhouettt (also spelled “Silhouette”) and Shi Ba Hee, further showcasing his influence as a producer and innovator.
The Black Cats, initiated in the 1960s in Tehran, later relaunched in Los Angeles and became a staple of the Persian pop diaspora. Over the decades, the band’s lineup changed frequently, featuring many renowned artists such as Ebi, Farhad Mehrad, his brother Shahram Shabpareh, Hassan Shamaizadeh, and others . Despite these changes, Shahbal remained the consistent creative force, guiding the band’s direction and evolution into various music styles, including his unique “rock dambuli” rhythmic blend.
Beyond his own performances, Shahbal played a pivotal role in nurturing the careers of numerous Persian artists. One notable success story is Sepideh, who rose to prominence after joining Silhouettt in 1998 under Shahbal’s guidance. Under his mentorship, the group released “Beauty and the Beat,” and Sepideh later launched her solo career—highlighting Shahbal’s eye for talent and commitment to advancing Persian pop.
Shahbal’s contributions extend well beyond performing—he has remained an enduring figure, anchoring the Black Cats across generations and geographic shifts. Today, he is celebrated as a key architect of Iranian pop music, having helped bridge traditional Persian rhythms with contemporary global styles. His legacy endures not just through his own music, but through the artists he introduced and the evolving sounds he pioneered.
