Mehdi Yarrahi<\/strong>, an Iranian singer, composer, and social activist, was born on November 14, 1981, in Ahvaz. His interest in music began in childhood, and between the ages of 10 and 13, he became fascinated with the musicality of Quranic verses during recitation competitions. After completing middle school, he studied music theory under Ali Kasraei, his only music teacher, and taught himself to play the piano and guitar.<\/p>\n

Yarrahi began his professional career in 2000 and gained fame in 2009 with the song “Havaye To” for the TV program “Mah-e Asal.” In 2011, he released his first official album, “Set Me Free,” with permission from the Ministry of Culture. His other works include the albums “Like a Statue,” “Full-Length Mirror,” and “The Emperor.” In 2017, he won the Barbad Award at the Fajr Music Festival for the album “Full-Length Mirror.”<\/p>\n

Yarrahi’s music often addresses social and political issues. In 2018, during a concert in Ahvaz, he wore the uniform of detained workers from the National Steel Company to show solidarity, leading to a temporary ban on his performances and television appearances. In 2019, he faced further restrictions after releasing the anti-war song “Paresang.”<\/p>\n

In August 2023, Yarrahi released the song “Roosarito,” encouraging women to remove their mandatory hijab. This led to his arrest and, in January 2024, he was sentenced to one year in prison and 74 lashes. After serving his sentence, he received the flogging in March 2025.<\/p>\n
